Make a hack out of a pic: Photo Hack Day Berlin!

We're surrounded by photography apps. It's the great trend in these times, and we all love to snap pictures with our mobile, look for a vintage filter, and, TA-DA!, we're photographers for a day. This feels great. The only thing you really need is to have a good eye. A sensible point of view.

Because technology is now available for everyone.

And this happens because of people like those who conform EyeEm.

EyeEm is a camera and photo discovery application for smartphones that lets you share and discover topics, places and events from the photos you take. Creativity through photography! That's why we're talking about them today.

How do they work?

You get the app and make a picture. Sure, you know how this works. Then you choose a filter out of the 12 available ones and you upload it. The new thing comes here: they're automatically tagged based on your location and activity. you make a picture of an abandoned playground, and after tagging it, the app will suggest you similarly tagged pictures.

This is pure inspiration, isn't it? It's more than just making pictures, it's a dynamic tool to get inspired and share pictures with a whole community all around the world.

Give and get back, that's what Internet is about. That's why they organized the first Photo Hack Day in Berlin!

Sorry, again. You said what?

Berlin's Photo Hack Day will happen on February 25th and 26th, EyeEm organizes it in collaboration with iStockPhoto. What's the goal? That developers and designers hack the future of photography. How? By releasing EyeEm's API, which allows third party developers to integrate the technology behind the app into its own products.

Let's say, you're in a concert in London. There's a tag stating which concert you're attending on what venue. Coldplay on Royal Albert Hall. Three tags. You'd get more pictures of other Coldplay concerts, or maybe you don't know about this concert and you just learn from it by checking the tag Royal Albert Hall, and you're able to buy a ticket! (well, maybe with Coldplay it won't be that easy).

All these interactions are possible by freeing API details. On the Hack Photo Day, the API will offer access to a wide range of EyeEm’s current capabilities, including acquiring user photos, albums, favourites, likes and comments, as well as topics and photo tags by city, country, venue and by event. On Saturday the 25th, developers will work through the night to present their efforts to the judges the following day and get the chance of picking up exclusive prizes.

Wow, sounds nice. But why are you talking about this?

Because we're creative partners of this Hack Day! Because we believe in the creative democratization, and there's no creative speciality as reachable by anyone as photography. Because photography is driven by innovation, experimentation and people who push their boundaries, as thay say. And because we love to be influenced by creativity.

And you? ;)

If you're in NY or Berlin, get informed about the Photo Hack Day here!

Hackingly yours,
