New business logo: 5 hints for companies

Company needs logo

When launching a company, when starting a business or even when opening a private medical practice or a lawyer’s office, always the same question appears: do we need a logo?

Indeed: a good logo is the basic starting point for a successful corporate communication. You need to show visually your company’s values, because your business has to be recognizable and easy to remember. This is also valid for small businesses, specially when considering how important the Internet is: your competitors are just a click away and you need to tie your customers with an attractive image.

That’s why we made up these hints from our 2500+ logo projects’ experience: 5 clear answers for logo design.

#1: Agency or freelance: where will I find the right creative?

Searching for the best matching option is generally a huge investment of time and effort. If you don’t have already a designer, you may opt for an agency, but this is not the cheapest option at all, even more when starting the whole business. Another solution is to look for a freelancer, but that implies to spend and dedicate time to look for the right one, checking profiles, browsing their previous work and asking for estimated costs.

#2: How much should I pay for a new logo?

Hard to say: between a 2-seat car and a sports car there’s also a huge difference. Big companies and corporations are almost always in the 6-number territory when ordering a new logo: you don’t need to invest that much. A budget between a 250€ minimum and a 2500€ maximum would be enough to find good ideas from an interesting number of creatives.

#3: What should I consider when briefing my logo?

When creating a logo, company’s values have to be always present. Answering to these questions is capital when creating a logo:

  • What is your USP as a company?
  • What’s your business branch?
  • What separates you from your competitors?
  • Which values should be associated to your company? Should it be dynamic, innovative, young-alike, fresh and creative, or rather solid, consolidated, conservative and serious?
  • Which goals and target group do you address to?
  • Do you have a clear idea about how should be your logo: just the name, or the name with a graphic element? And where should it be used (web, print…)?
  • Do you have any idea about colours or other details? Describe them, and what you do and don’t like, with particular examples if possible.

#4: How can I recognize a good logo from a bad one?

A good logo is the one that suits you and your needs: your activity, your budget, your values, your corporate design (if any), and your customers. It has to be easy to grasp and catchy, even in a tiny format. Obviously, your logo should also work well in every communication: in your stationery, your website, faxes or posters. Best match: when in your logo design there’s a graphic idea that shows your business activity. Your goal should be to stand out from your competitors’ logo at the first sight, and of course, you should be 110% convinced about your logo..

#5: What about the intellectual rights and the rights of use?

Of course, the intellectual rights of the design stay by the designer, and he/she sells to you the unrestricted and unlimited rights of use of the design. That’s just a semantic question that won’t affect your business, as long as you have the right to use your logo as often as you wish.
